'Game of Thrones' season 5 finale recap: Daenerys runs into a Khalasar

Jon Snow in Game of ThronesHBO/ Game of Thrones

The season 5 finale of "Game of Thrones" ended with a shocking scene that made fans ask the same question: did the series really kill off one of the most beloved characters in the show?

Stannis Baratheon and his army rode to Winterfell, but Ramsay Bolton's men were more than prepared as Stannis' army was annihilated. He was injured, and he dragged himself into the woods. Brienne of Tarth appeared and confronted him about Renly. He confessed to killing his brother, and Brienne took a swing at him with her sword.

Inside the castle, Sansa Stark was desperate to escape but she got caught by Myranda, who was all too willing to shoot her full of arrows. Reek hovered behind Myranda, looking very uncomfortable about the situation. Just as she was about to let loose the first arrow, he pushed her over the wall and she plummeted to her death. Theon has returned to his old self. He and Sansa ran, and they jumped off from the castle.

Meanwhile, Myrcella was about to go home with Jaime Lannister, and as she bade goodbye to everyone, Ellaria told her, "I wish you all the happiness in the world," before kissing her on the lips. On the boat, Jaime struggled to tell Myrcella who her father is, but she stopped him and told him that she knew that he's her father. The two embraced, but the tender moment was ruined when she started to bleed from the nostrils and fell to the floor. On the shore, Ellaria was bleeding too, but she wiped her lips and took the antidote to the poison that she gave to Myrcella.

In Braavos, Meryn Trant was torturing some young girls until he got to one girl who wasn't making a sound no matter how hard he beat her. She took off her mask, and it's Arya. She stabbed Meryn, and Jaqen was not pleased with what she had done. Jaqen drank poisoned water and he died. Arya was horrified, but then someone behind her spoke — it was Jaqen. Arya pulled face after face from the body until she uncovered her own face, and Arya went blind.

Daario and Jorah began looking for Daenerys while Tyrion, Missandei, and Grey Worm remained in Meereen. Meanwhile, Dany was trying to coax Drogon to take her back to Meereen, but the dragon, worn out and suffering from his wounds, could barely even stand up, much less fly. Daenerys decided to make the journey on foot, until she was surrounded by men on horses — a khalasar.

Cersei confessed to sleeping with Lancel Lannister, and the High Priest allowed her to go home, but first, she had to do her atonement. Her long hair was shorn off, and she was forced to walk naked through a screaming crowd while a nun rang a bell behind her and intoned, "Shame, shame!" Cersei was pelted with rotting vegetables and feces as she made her journey toward home, and she made it. She was greeted by Qyburn and introduced her to a new king's guard member who carried her off to get treated for her wounds.

At the Wall, Olly ran to Jon Snow and told him that there was a wildling outside who knows where his missing Uncle Benjen is. Jon hurried out, and he saw the sign that said "traitor". The men took turns stabbing him, and as they did, they muttered, "For the Watch". Lastly, Olly approached Jon, looking as if he was about to cry. He stabbed Jon in the heart, delivering the killing blow.

"For the Watch," said Olly.

The final scene saw Jon Snow on the ground with his eyes open, his blood seeping into the white snow.
