'Game of Thrones' season 6 spoilers: Melisandre going through changes

Game of Thrones - MelisandreHBO

"Game of Thrones" has seen several characters go through wide story arcs, such as Sansa (Sophie Turner) starting as a simple-minded noble from the North turning into an abused victim and a political strategist and Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) as a weak and frail little girl into a domineering queen. It now appears that the same change of character will occur to the Lady Melisandre (Carice van Houten).

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actress revealed that Melisandre will see a sudden change in direction.

"The arc of my character is finally going in a different direction," the actress revealed. "It's changing and I really like it. We see her from a really different side of her now. We see somebody whose whole belief system is tumbling down. She's completely confused, and I really like to play that."

Through the first five seasons, Melisandre has been seen as a dominating force keeping King Stannis (Stephen Dillane) on a destructive path, with a promise that he woul be king. During the previous season she even convinced Stannis to burn his own daughter alive in order to gain her god's favor and to give him an edge in battle.

Despite this, the battle did not go in Stannis' favor and Melisandre fled the scene, heading to the Wall to warn Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) about Stannis's defeat. However, she arrives just as the members of the Night's Watch betray and kill Jon Snow, leading fans to believe that Melisandre will be the one to bring him back to life.

Van Houten also explained that she did receive a lot of angry messages from fans due to Melisandre's actions, particularly after the death of Shireen (Kerry Ingram), but also stated fans were willing to forgive her if she could breath life back to Jon Snow, an act that a different Red Priest was able to do.

"Game of Thrones" season 6 will premiere on HBO this April 24.
