GameStop will be rolling out a new video rental platform by means of PowerPass. It's a lot like the old times with VHS tapes, only now it's for video games.

According to Mashable, the new rental service is exclusively open to GameStop's Power-Up Rewards members ­— for both of those under free membership and those paying either $14.99 or $29.99 per year. Not yet a member? No worries. Anyone interested can easily create accounts on the company's website.

Once already a Power-Up member, the user must sign-up for the game rental subscription. That requires a one-time payment of $60, which will be valid for the next six months. Within that time, the customer can borrow and return games anytime and as often as he wants — no time limit and no maximum number of swaps. There is one catch though, a member can only take home one game at a time.

Those who feel like $60 for a six-month subscription is too much will be happy to know that there is a reason for that. Once the membership is over, the customer can pick one game to keep forever at no extra cost. This cycle repeats every time a subscription ends. So, it's a lot like the digital trial versions, but a player can try out as many games as he wants then decide after half a year whatever is worth keeping.

As digital gaming continues to rise in popularity and as customers start to prefer ordering games online than personally going to gaming stores, this move from GameStop seems to be a very logical one. This also maximizes the store's excessive stock of second-hand games, while creating a new continuous source of income that can be renewed twice a year.
