Brazil will look to defeat Germany in their World Cup 2014 semi-final on Tuesday despite missing key players Neymar and captain Thiago Silva.

These two teams combined have played an amazing 206 World Cup games – 102 for Brazil and 104 for Germany – which is more than another other sides in the history of the tournament.

Despite that record, it is even more amazing that these two teams have only played each other once before in the tournament. That meeting came in the 2002 final when Brazil came out winners 2-0.

Coming into this game, Brazil are facing accusations from German coach Joachim Low that they are a Brazilian side not keeping up with the free-flowing football traditionally associated with Brazil teams of the past. Low has said that he expects the Brazil team to be strong in the tackle and be more direct than Brazil teams of old have played.

Indeed, Brazil committed more fouls in their last game against Colombia – 31 – than they have in any other World Cup match since records began in 1966.

However, they are undefeated in their last 42 home matches, and have not lost on home soil since 2002 when they were defeated by Paraguay. That means Germany will have to be at their best to eliminate Brazil in their own back yard.

It is also interesting to learn that Brazil have not lost a semi-final since their first last four game against Italy in 1938. In their six semi-finals since then they have won five and drawn one – and even that draw ended with them progressing as they won the penalty shoot out against Holland in 1998.
