Get out and about during National Parks Week

Dig out your walking boots and anorak and hit the trail during National Parks Week this week.

As part of the week, Britain's 15 national parks are hosting free or low priced walks and activities for families and walkers of all abilities.

The walks are not only a good opportunity to learn something new but also do something healthy and fun.

There are different themed walks spanning a variety of interests, including archaeology and wildlife.

If you are in the Lake District or Peak District, why not learn some bush craft and survival skills days.

In the Pembrokeshire Coast, you can travel back in time to experience life in an Iron Age hut, or enjoy a fun pottery session in the Brecon Beacons.

Some walks are longer and more challenging for adventurous spirits, but there are also shorter walks being conducted along paths suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.

Carl Lis, chairman of the UK Association of National Park Authorities is encouraging everyone to get involved.

“Together with others National Park Authorities make sure that National Parks are kept beautiful, open and accessible so that everyone can take time out from the stresses of daily life to refresh mind, body and spirit in stunning natural surroundings.

"National Parks Week is a great opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in a way that’s not only fun but healthy and good
for the body and mind.”

The week runs until 31 July, just in time for the summer holidays and particularly timely if you're planning family break somewhere in the UK.

Walkers are encouraged to make a day of it by bringing a picnic. Just don't forget the sturdy boots, waterproof jacket and sun hat!
