The sequel to the 2014 science fiction monster film "Godzilla" is reportedly scheduled for a 2018 release. Writer Max Borenstein teased that it would be "bigger and better" than the original movie. Does that mean viewers would see larger and superior monsters?

During the recently concluded Television Critics Association for Minority Reports, Borenstein told Collider that he was currently writing the script for "Godzilla 2," but he declined to reveal other details.

"I don't want to go off book and tell you anything that I'm not allowed to tell you. The response to the first film was really exciting, but now that that world is established, we can do bigger and even better things. We're really stoked," said Borenstein.

The 2014 movie revolved around Navy bomb expert Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his estranged father Joe (Bryan Cranston). After a brief reunion with his family in San Francisco, Ford was forced to go to Japan, where his father was based, to help him with a strange phenomenon.

Bigger-than-life monsters sprouted and threatened the lives of humanity. Amid the escalating crisis, Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arose from the sea to battle with the adversaries. The fight left massive destruction in its wake as the beasts proceed to the final battleground where Ford's family was — San Francisco.

It is not yet clear who among the original cast members may return. When asked if he would be reprising his role as Ford, Johnson was noncommittal with his answer.

"I don't know if I'd be a part of it, if it would be set somewhere else, if it's going to be in the future. It's just kind of, it's just so broad," the actor told Cinemablend.

At Comic-Con last year, Legendary offered some tidbits on what types of monsters viewers could expect to see in the sequel. According to The Global Dispatch, the film would include Rodan, the pteranodon kaiju; Mothra, the divine moth kaiju; and Ghidorah, the three-headed dragon.

Meanwhile, rumors on the possible crossover between "Godzilla 2" and the other legendary movie "Pacific Rim 2" still hound the Internet. The sequel to Guillermo del Toro's monster-versus-robot film is currently under works, with filming to begin two months from now.

Movie Pilot posits that "Pacific Rim" would "set the stage" for a crossover with "Godzilla," claiming that both films contain elements that could be merged into one big story. The portal that Kaiju would be using to enter the world could be the Pacific Rim, which would then also allow Godzilla characters to pass through.

"Godzilla 2" is currently set for release on June 8, 2018.
