The sophomore season of FOX's "Gotham" will be unveiled in just a few hours, and it promises to dig deeper into the origins of some of the most dangerous nemeses of the Caped Crusader. 

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ben McKenzie shared that "Gotham" season 2 will be very different from the first season. 

"It is almost completely serialized. We're aiming for a grander, saga-type construction in which we can actually sit with the characters and understand their motivations and how the turbulence of their lives affects the greater landscape," the actor, who portrays Gotham's notable police detective James Gordon, shared. 

Gordon is set to encounter some of the most vicious villains who make life in Gotham more difficult, before Batman eventually runs after them. McKenzie also explained that in the new season of the TV adaptation of the popular DC Comics story, Gordon might have to tap into his darker side in order to defeat all the new villains in the city. 

"We're going to be playing with the notion of the rise and fall and possibly rise and fall again of both his standing in Gotham as a public figure and also his ability to keep it all together morally and otherwise — his relationship with Thompkins [Morena Baccarin] and everything," the actor said.

The actor teased that the viewers will have to catch the first few episodes of the season to find out the backstory of Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), who is believed to be who Batman's mortal enemy, The Joker, was in the past. 

Meanwhile, actor Sean Pertwee said that "Gotham" season 2 will be more explosive compared to the first season. The British star told Digital Spy that Gotham's peace and order will reach rock bottom this season to pave the way for the young Bruce Wayne to become the city's ultimate protector. 

"We have to get to the bottom of the barrel for Batman to rise, phoenix-like, out of the ashes," Pertwee said.

"Gotham" season 2 premieres Monday, Sept. 21, on FOX. The new season can be viewed online via live stream on FOX NOW.
