One of the most ruthless villains of "Gotham" will return in the upcoming episodes of season 2.

TVLine revealed that Jada Pinkett Smith will reprise her role as Fish Mooney in the DC Comics-based crime-drama series. Mooney was last seen in episode 22 titled "All Happy Families Are Alike," where her bloody battle with Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) pushed her to her death.

But since the show is based on the DC Comics universe, it is not unusual to see a supposedly dead character come back to life.

Showrunner Bruno Heller talked about the possibility of seeing Mooney back in the series in an earlier interview with Comic Book, saying, "Personally I'm still hoping that Jada will be back. One of the problems of making a show like this is that you need actors who can really be big characters," he said.

"You either have bigness or you don't, and Jada is big in spades. She's done a wonderful job for us and nobody dies forever in the DC Universe, necessarily, so I'm hoping whatever happens at the end of this season that Fish can and will be back."

At the time, Pinkett Smith gave a vague answer when asked if she would return to the show.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly in May 2015, she said, "I love Fish. She's one of my favorite characters. If she survives, I would definitely be willing to do whatever was necessarily to continue servicing the story of Gotham. I think I'm going to hold onto these nails for a minute."

Details regarding Mooney's return to the series are currently a mystery. But Variety offered several possible scenarios for her return in season 2. She could either return in flashbacks or survive the fall. There is also a theory saying that Fish Mooney could be resurrected in the mysterious lab located at the Indian Hill, just like what happened to Theo Galavan (James Frain).

The second half of "Gotham" season 2 returns to Fox on Monday, Feb. 29.
