The second half of "Gotham" season 2 will see how the dynamics of nemesis-turned-partners-in-crime Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) will change after working together during the midseason finale of "Gotham."

Before the FOX series went on its winter break, viewers saw the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) detective surrendering to his inner demons and executing Theo Galavan (James Frain). Although he was wavering with his intentions to put justice in his hands, Penguin's urging was all the reason he needed to do the deed. The pair dragged Theo in a deserted dock and killed him.

Jim decided to team up with the villain to stop Theo's reign in Gotham City once and for all. He knew that the police force was not enough to defeat the other side. What was surprising, though, was when Jim crossed his moral line by summarily executing Theo. Captain Nathaniel Barnes (Michael Chiklis) expressly forbade him to let his anger get the better of him. No matter how many bad things Theo had done to him and to his beloved city, killing the villain point blank was not something an upright man like Jim would do.

When season 2B returns, Penguin is expected to claim his throne as the primary villain of Gotham. It remains unclear if Jim will still be with the GCPD, as Barnes will likely launch an investigation on why Theo suddenly turned up dead. The trail will eventually lead to Jim and it is entirely possible he may be dismissed from service. When Jim and Penguin eventually meet again, how will their relationship be? Is their partnership a one-time event only?

Meanwhile, Jim has an even bigger problem than being sacked. Executive producer Bruno Heller told TV Guide that the thing the detective should worry more about is his new fiancĂ©e Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin). Jim proposed to the doctor after learning that she was pregnant with his child. Once she learns that he killed Theo, there is bound to be a backlash that can affect their relationship.

"The biggest price he will pay is in his relationship with Lee Tompkins. Jim's essentially an honest man, so the need to have honest relationships does betray him in the end," the executive producer said.

"Gotham" Season 2 will return on Monday, Feb. 29, at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
