'Gotham' season 2 spoilers: Mr. Freeze origins teased

Gotham - Mr. FreezeFox

The latest trailer for the second half of "Gotham" season 2, dubbed "Wrath of the Villains," gives fans their first good look at Victor Fries aka Mr. Freeze (Nathan Darrow). Although the trailer is only half a minute long, a report from Screen Rant reveals that the scenes in the promo give a good hint at how Mr. Freeze's story will play out.

The promo clip showcases Fries in regular clothing, indicating that for a few episodes he will not encounter the life-altering accident that will forever keep him in a cryo-suit in order to survive. He still wields his freeze gun and manages to freeze a few people but it does not necessarily kill them, as the clip indicates victims may survive the thawing process.

Mr. Freeze's motivations for freezing and kidnapping people is also revealed in the clip. As his wife Nora (Kristen Hager) is terminally ill, the villain is shown using his kidnapped villains to experiment a new machine that could keep Nora alive in cryostasis long enough for the world to create a cure for her disease.

Screen Rant also points out that there are leaked images spreading across the Internet showcasing Mr. Freeze in his cryosuit, confirming that at some point in season 2 he will undergo his iconic accident that cements him as a Batman villain.

"Gotham" season 1 was known for its pulp, neo-noir tone and grounded story that focused primarily on the conflict between numerous mob gangs but season 2 has begun to up the ante by introducing the colorful but dangerous supervillains that fill up Batman's rogue gallery.

This is more evident in the trailer itself, as Gordon (Ben McKenzie) explains "The bad guys in this town are changing. I don't know how bad it's going to get," further implying that Mr. Freeze's introduction will bring the series one step closer to the world comic book fans are familiar with.

"Gotham" season 2 premieres this Feb. 29.
