"Gotham" season 3 is set to introduce the character Jervis Tetch aka the Mad Hatter. The character will be portrayed by Benedict Samuel, and in an interview with Zap 2 It, the newcomer explains that the Mad Hatter's purpose isn't to cause crime and destruction but to look for his missing sister.

"His purpose is to find his sister and I think he'll move hell and high earth to find her. A helpful thing for me has always been - this is from a great acting teacher Declan Donnellan - is this beautiful way of expressing how and why people do things that other people may not do. It's a simple sentence that says, 'I understand you, you don't understand me.' I feel the Mad Hatter certainly operates in that way," Samuel explained.

This will be a little bit of a departure from the Mad Hatter from the Batman comic books. In the source materials, Mad Hatter is depicted as a genius who invents all sorts of mind-controlling devices and also suffers from mental illnesses. In "Gotham," however, it is revealed he is looking for his sister who has some form of power.

A report from Variety has also revealed that his sister, Alice Tetch, has been officially cast. Mexican actress Naian Gonzalez Norvind will be portraying the character. 

The report also reveals that her power, referred to as a gift, is viewed differently by Jervis. While Jervis sees it as a gift and wants to unleash it unto the world, Alice sees it as a curse and for this reason she is constantly trying to run away from her brother to ensure he never gets a hold of it.

Norvind previously appeared in an episode of "Blue Bloods" and on "Backstabbers." Her career primarily started with her performance in the New York stage presentation of "Her Requiem." She will also appear in the film "Rebel in the Rye" alongside Nicholas Hoult and kevin Spacey.

"Gotham" season 3 will premiere this Sept. 19.
