"Grand Theft Auto 6" could reportedly be breaking new ground by introducing a new kind of protagonist to the wildly successful franchise.

In this case, the big change to the franchise could be coming in the form of a female lead character.

According to Neurogadget, the possibility of a female protagonist coming to the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise has been rumored for a while now. The franchise has already done a lot of different things when it comes to protagonists for their games, and they even went with three lead characters for their most recent offering.

Along with all the Internet rumors, Rockstar Games Founder Dan Houser himself has also stated that the possibility remains that the franchise will eventually feature a female protagonist.

In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Houser stated that they are indeed considering a female lead character to be featured in one future game from the franchise. Houser added that the main reason Rockstar Games did not go with at least one female lead for "Grand Theft Auto 5," was because the character did not fit in with what they were trying to accomplish for the title. He went on to say that a female lead appearing in a "Grand Theft Auto" game would come about naturally and be the product of a great fit as opposed to something they just felt they needed to do.

It's also been rumored that if and when Rockstar Games does choose to go with a female protagonist, then it is believed that they will be enlisting Eva Mendes to voice the character.

In related news, the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise has just recently broken through the 220 million sales mark, according to Gamespot. "Grand Theft Auto 5" on its own has passed 54 million copies sold as well.

With sales figures as robust as they are, "Grand Theft Auto 6" may not be too far away from being released.
