'GTA 6' to take place in a 1970 New York setting? Paris also a possibility

The latest "GTA" installmentWikipedia

"Grand Theft Auto VI" is easily the core of major speculations and rumors in the gaming realm. After the successful release of the PS4 and Xbox One versions of "GTA V" just about two weeks ago, the attention has, swiftly and unsurprisingly, already shifted to its alleged successor.

Rockstar North Studio President Leslie Benzies has already hinted on the prospect of an all-new "GTA" installment. Way back in October, he told Develop that they will have something for "GTA VI" in the future.

"We've got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do," Benzies revealed. "We don't know what 'GTA VI' will be, but we've got some ideas."

With this, it is safe to say that "GTA VI" is on the cards after all.

Rumors, as echoed by Latino Post, suggest that the highly-anticipated title will be set in the year 1970. This means that location rumors such as Vice City, which is the "GTA" counterpart of Miami, and Liberty City, which is the game's New York version, will be blanketed with a retro feel. The latter, however, is given much weight because of a statement dropped by American hip hop DJ Whoo Kid during an interview with website Baller Status last April.

When asked what video he was in, he replied, "I was in Call Of Duty and I was in some Grand Theft Auto games. I'm bout to be in the new Grand Theft Auto that takes place in New York again."

However, Latinos Post was quick to iterate that the DJ may have been pertaining to a "GTA V" extension instead of a whole new "GTA" installment.

On the other hand, it is also reported that there is a possibility of a Paris setting. In addition, places like London, Brazil and Las Vegas are thought about as well. However, fans seem to favor the idea of engaging epic action and larger-than-life felony at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Regarding the characters, a big change may possibly take place. This report came from a statement made by Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser months back.

"In the future, could we do a game with a female lead character? Of course, we just haven't found the right game for it yet, but it's one of the things that we always think about," Houser said as cited by Latino Post.

Amid all the promising rumors, gamers always go back to the fact that "GTA VI" is still far off. Kpop Starz mentioned a possible 2017 release. Latino Post, citing the website gta6grandtheftauto.com, says that it will take longer than that, enough to have the rollout take place in 2018 or even 2020. While that sounds too backbreaking to think of, fans of the much-loved action-adventure video game can, for now, set their eyes on the January 2015 release of the PC version of "GTA V."
