The Green Bay Packers are bringing back veteran wide receiver James Jones as he was signed following his release from the New York Giants last Saturday.

Jones was the Packers' third round pick in the 2007 National Football League (NFL) Draft and he played his first seven seasons with the team before leaving following the 2013 season.  

As he parted ways with the Packers, Jones signed with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent and only lasted one season being released after the 2014 season. 

The Giants signed the 31-year-old receiver to a one-year deal July but he failed to make the roster cut last Saturday. 

According to ESPN, the Packers have been interested in Jones since leading wide receiver Jordy Nelson was ruled out for the entire 2015 season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) suffered in the second week of the 2015 preseason when they played against the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

The Packers waited until the Giants released Jones then they set up a visit, ESPN added. 

Before re-signing with the Packers, Jones said he was hoping he could get a deal, adding that he is excited and he felt good being back home. 

The last time Jones donned a Packers uniform in a regular season was in 2013 when he played in 14 games having 59 receptions for 817 yards and three touchdowns. 

Last season with the Raiders, he played in 16 games and had 73 receptions for 666 yards and six touchdowns. 

Jones may not be as productive as Nelson but he will surely be filling a part of the void left by the injured receiver.

He will also provide veteran leadership at the position since the Packers are loaded with young wide receivers being led by Randall Cobb and Davante Adams. 

The Packers will open their Super Bowl bid at Soldier Field facing the Chicago Bears on Sept. 13.
