'Grey's Anatomy' season 11 spoilers: 'Time Stops' pits Meredith against Amelia in the midst of a catastrophe in episode 24

Grey's Anatomy season 11 episode 24 ABC

"Grey's Anatomy" season 11 just saw the death of Dr. Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey. A two-hour special, "She's Leaving Home," was aired to show how his passing affected everyone in the team, particularly his wife Dr. Meredith Grey. It appears like the following episode, "Time Stops," will only bring more trouble to the table.

According to a report from the IBTimes, Derek's sister finally confronts Meredith about her decision to pull Derek off life-support. Dr. Amelia Shepherd argues that she could have saved him but Meredith retorts that it was too late and that Derek was already declared brain-dead.

It may be a little distorting for fans because the last episode saw Amelia warmly welcoming her sister-in-law, hugging Meredith and her new daughter Ellis when they returned home. It might just be a display of common courtesies and the reality of Derek's death will begin to sink in once Amelia realizes that only Meredith was around when Derek's life ended.

The clash doesn't end with Amelia lashing out at Meredith. As everyone tries to deal with their emotions, something catastrophic happens in Seattle. Leaked set photos posted via Twitter show a collapsed road or tunnel so it is possible that an earthquake or explosion could have injured and killed dozens if not hundreds of people.

The IMDB page for the episode also lists a patient billed as "tunnel victim in wheelchair," further implying that the event may be a tunnel cave-in, trapping several cars with injured people inside.

A catastrophe like this will force the doctors to put aside their grievances and get to work. Series creator Shonda Rhimes has shown before that she is capable of juxtaposing her character's emotions and thoughts with the surgical cases that they have to deal with at the hospital, and this might be the perfect parallel.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 11 episode 24, "Time Stops," airs on May 7.
