After its dark season 11, Shonda Rhimes' long-running medical drama series "Grey's Anatomy" will offer something lighter when it returns later this month.

Recent spoilers for season 12 claim that the critically-acclaimed drama will have a three-month time jump after the heartbreaking death of Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). According to Variety, the show will feature a lighter mood compared to the gloomy atmosphere in the past season. It will also delve into more romance this time.

Debbie Allen, the actress who portrays the role of the newly married Dr. Catherine Avery, said that her character will have an exciting relationship with Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr).

"We'll just say that we are giving new life to sexy over 50," she said, "We have a very hot relationship. Richard has got her busy."

But the newly-wed couple will not be the only ones who will make the screen sizzle. A source told the website that there will be more flirting and sexy scenes this season.

Some of the couples to watch out for include Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), who decided to living together in their new loft. There is also Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) who will weigh their feelings if they want to remain friends or start being friends with benefits since they will begin to be physically intimate with each other. Also, former lovers Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) will start seeing other new people.

But understandably, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will make romance the least of her priorities after the death of her husband Derek. Instead, she will allegedly have a personal rebirth, according to the series creator.

"I think Meredith is in a rebirth and she's evolving. I'm watching the character do what the character's doing and I'll see where it goes. I'm not going to say we're definitely not doing it, because I could be wrong, but that's not my plan right now. You can't just drop a guy in and be like, 'There he is!'" Rhimes earlier stated during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 24, on ABC.
