'Grey's Anatomy' season 12 spoilers news: Meredith copes with Derek's death, April and Jackson split

Grey's Anatomy season 12 returns with heartbreaks and tears on Sept. 24.ABC

Although fans are tirelessly waiting for "Grey's Anatomy" to return for its twelfth season, creator Shonda Rhimes cautions that there would be a lot of heartbreaks and split ups to expect among their favorite doctors and interns.

During the 2015 Television Critics Association summer press tour, Rhimes revealed several spoilers for the upcoming season of the hit ABC medical drama series. Most of them, however, would cause major disappointment to the followers of the tandems in the show.

The first on the list of break-ups that the series creator hinted at was the Callie-Arizona couple. Entertainment Weekly reports that the two will start dating other women. In the past, Callie (Sara Ramirez) was known to go out with guys like George O'Malley (T.R. Knight) and Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), on the other hand, would stick to dating girls.

"Arizona obviously does not date men, and Callie's love interest so far this season is a woman. I like that we're honoring the fact that her character is bisexual. I feel like her energy right now feels like that's what she's looking for," Rhimes said.

Meanwhile, fans of April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) will be saddened to know that they will no longer be together in season 12. In the last finale, Dr. Avery was seen telling his wife that if she left for another trip overseas, their marriage was over. The Inquisitr reports that April will still push through with her plans to travel, and that may mean end of their union. Due to the time jump, viewers may not even witness the actual break-up, only the fallout of their decision.

If the splits were not enough to depress fans, Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) plight for season 12 as she tries to cope up with the death of her husband, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), surely would be. Rhimes revealed that Dr. Grey would be living with her sisters. When asked whether they were planning a new love interest for her soon, the creator said no. E! News reports that Meredith would not be interested in dating soon, as she would still be pondering on her current life.

"Meredith is in a rebirth and she's evolving. I'm watching the character do what the character's doing and I'll see where it goes," Rhimes said,

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 premieres Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
