"Grey's Anatomy" season 13 is going back to basics, as revealed in a previous report. However, it is still going to explore new avenues with the characters that have joined the series since its debut, and a report from Entertainment Weekly reveals audiences will get more development regarding April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams).

Back in previous seasons the couple went through major obstacles and this eventually led to them getting divorced despite the fact they have a child to look after. According to series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes season 13 is going to explore how the two will deal with being divorced and how it affects their kid.

"In a much lighter way, what it means to be uncoupled, to be divorced, and to have a kid, and how you do that?" she explained. "They're going to really try to do this in a healthy way, and is that healthy way going to feel so healthy when they still have feelings for each other?"

While the show explores April and Jackson's relationship it will also focus back on the original characters first introduced in season 1 such as Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Alex (Justin Chambers) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson). Because of this many fans have speculated that Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) might return.

Morning News USA points out that Sandra Oh had reacted to an event in season 12 last June when her character's ex-husband, Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), had married someone else. However, the actress has not given any official comments regarding a possible return and neither has Rhimes or the writers.

Cristina Yang departed from the series several seasons back and her final episode also saw the brief return of Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington), who was Cristina's first love interest in the show.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 13 premieres on Sept. 22.
