'GTA 6' release date news: development of all-new location and characters may delay title until 2020

"Grand Theft Auto 6" won't be here anytime soon, according to the latest reports. The "GTA 5" sequel is rumored to be released after two to four years. The long wait is reportedly because developer Rockstar is changing a lot about the game.

"GTA 6" is rumored to be set in Japan, specifically in Tokyo. Rockstar has long thought of such idea and has even filed a trademark for it.

Rockstar has once pursued a "GTA" game set in the said Asian city, according to Tech Radar. But it ultimately did not work out due to the location's "problematic" road system.

Media outlets believe that it is high time for Rockstar to set the game outside the United States. Each and every iteration of the open-world action-adventure title was set in America.

However, if "GTA 6" will be set in Japan, Rockstar will be making a chunk of changes. Since Rockstar has established itself and expanded the game in various U.S. settings, many of the elements such as the cars and the brands in "GTA" will have to be completely changed.

This presents a big challenge for the team but is nonetheless considered an interesting prospect. The location change might also require longer time to put together, since Rockstar will be recreating a new city outside of their established terrain.

Apart from the location change, the characters will reportedly be a major departure from the ones fans have come to know. "GTA 6" is rumored to be the first installment in the mega popular franchise to feature a female lead. Eva Longoria is said to play that character although no information corroborates this yet.

According to reports, "GTA 6" production is now underway. However, since Rockstar is known for its protracted production process, it might not be here until 2018.

Some rumors even claim that the "GTA 6" will be released in time for a PlayStation 5, which might not be here until 2020.

Right now, Rockstar still has its attention to "GTA 5." It hasn't mentioned anything about "GTA 6" yet but media outlets expect that it will be made official sooner or later.
