'GTA 6' release date update: Follow-up could still be far off

As developer Rockstar continues to explore the full potential of "GTA 5" with consistent updates and add-on releases, fans start to look far ahead into its successor "GTA 6." There are already tons of speculations about the follow-up but it doesn't look like it's going to get here in the near future.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently opened up to Gamespot about the annualization of titles and why the company isn't a fan of such set-up. Zelnick says that it entails more than a year to put a high quality title out in the open and it "takes time" making it perfect. Doing that annually is like "burning off your intellectual property."

"What we would like to do is be able to have enough hit intellectual properties in any given year, whether we have Title A or Title B, is not the issue," the Take Two CEO explained. In the case of "GTA 6," Zelnick revealed that a designated schedule isn't set for it as well as for other Rockstar titles like "Red Dead" and "Max Payne."

Zelnick is confident that Take-Two still enjoys what companies with annual releases enjoy. "We'll have a handful of really great franchises and new intellectual properties that together really have the economic impact of an annualized business without the detriments of an annualized business," he went on to say.

As for "GTA 6," the Take-Two CEO is not ready to make it official although he did refer to "Grand Theft Auto" as a "permanent" franchise, which means that fans will still see more of the hit video game series in the near future. Zelnick emphasized that such title will take Rockstar a while to get done.

Previous rumors about the title indicate that big stars like Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are taking part. It was said that it will be set in a brand new setting with a sprawling location to boast.
