The 2014 superhero film "Guardians of the Galaxy" was already on its way to getting a successor even prior to its opening. And thanks to the critical and financial success of the first film, a sequel is definitely on its way.

Fans and critics will be ecstatic to hear about the details about the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy 2." James Gunn, the director and writer of the film, spoke to Alison Rosen on her podcast titled "Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend" and leaked some information regarding the sequel.

Gunn said, "It's not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it'll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that. We'll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we're going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole."

The supervillain Thanos, who appeared in the first film, was also mentioned. According to the director, the villain will be appearing in the film only if he adds weight to the plot of the sequel.

Gunn stated, "Thanos is not the most important thing in 'Guardians 2,' that's for d**n sure. There's the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos."

On a budget of a little less than $200 million, Gunn's tenacity allowed "Guardians of the Galaxy" to garner approximately $775 million in box office revenue along with a 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will reprise the roles of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, and it is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
