"Guardians of the Galaxy" was an unexpected hit in the box office and immediately after the movie was shown, talks about the sequel already started. Indeed, "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will happen, but writer-director James Gunn had to blow off some speculations going into the sequel. 

First and foremost, Gunn talked about shared movie universes and how skeptical he is about it.

In a Facebook post he entitled "Carts Before Horses & Hollywood's New Love of Shared Universes," he said, "Listen, I love big (a–) shared universes in movies, as well as huge franchises. But I'm a little worried about the numerous shared universes being planned by the studios, without having a strong base film to grow from — or in some cases, NO base film to grow from." 

According to Gunn, many production companies are now setting their sights too much on the big picture, thus failing to focus on just making a really good movie.  He likens it to the act of attempting to grow trees without having a strong seed. Clearly, Gunn doesn't like the business model of shared movie universes and believes it's "flawed." For him, it's more important to focus on making a single great film than start a film with making sequels in mind.  

Indeed, Gunn made a good point on this one, but what does he have to say about the Star-Lord plot for the sequel? 

According to Screen Rant, Gunn said, "It's funny, I don't want to blackbox it too much. You know what I mean? Yeah, it's like, we'll find out who his dad is, and it's going to serve the story... It's not about the revelation of who it is; it's about what his relationship is to that character." 

Gunn also made it clear that Peter Quill's father will not be the same as it is in the comics. Gunn wants to go about this storyline in a different way because, as he said, "I'm not a big fan of the name J'son." 

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
