"Guardians of the Galaxy" was a surprise hit for fans, critics, and even for Marvel. Details for the film's sequel have been sparse and few in between, with a lot of the attention geared towards "Avengers: Age of Ultron." However, director James Gunn has hinted at the film's themes and where the story is heading.

According to an interview with Vulture, Gunn explains that the film will address who Star-Lord's father is. In the first film, Star-Lord (Christ Pratt) learns that he is not entirely human. The Nova Corps inform him that while his mother is human, his father is of a different race and this is why he was able to hold on to one of the Infinity Stones without dying.

"At its heart, 'Guardians' is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it's exciting to go there," the director explains.

This does not confirm that Star-Lord's father will indeed be in the film. The character may only be referenced and other people of his race could be seen but the character itself may not be featured. Given Gunn's excitement for the project, however, it is safe to presume that Star-Lord will indeed come face to face with his father in the sequel.

In addition to Gunn hinting at the continuation of Star-Lord's story, Production Weekly reports that the current working title for the next film is "Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Galaxy 3000." Working titles very often are meant to throw off the press or serve as inside jokes but in this case, "Galaxy 3000" may hint at what the writers and director have planned out.

In the older "Guardians of the Galaxy" comic books, prior to the launch of the MCU, the events took place in the far future and the band of misfit heroes included the likes of Yondu, Vance Astro, Star Hawk, and others. It is possible that some of these characters may be included in the team's roster. One of them, Yondu (Michael Rooker), already did during the last arc of the first film.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" releases on May 5 2017.
