2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy" was a surprise hit for Marvel and Disney despite the fact that barely anyone knew what the property was about. Because of its success, it comes as no surprise that the film is getting a sequel.  On a recent Q&A on social media outlet Periscope, director James Gunn finally announced that production for the follow-up film may begin in February 2016. 

According to a report by CBM, Gunn announced that the initial treatment for the movie is complete and that he now has the first 70 pages of the film's script already laid out and ready for production. Shooting will commence at the Pinewood Atlanta Studio, following the footsteps of both "Ant-Man" and "Captain America: Civil War."

The previous film was shot in London and made use of British extras and minor supporting actors. The change in location could be an indication that a shift in tone may be in the works for the next "Guardians of the Galaxy" flick. On the other hand, The Collider surmises that it may be possible that Marvel is simply moving to the Atlanta studios to give way to "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" and its spin-off projects which are also being produced in London. 

Despite Gunn's openness with the fans, very few details surrounding the film's plot and premise have been released thus far. The director did state in a previous report by Screen Rant that the sequel is not based on any comic book, a move that the studios reportedly told him were "risky" to do but was nonetheless given the green light. He has also stated that it will reveal the identity of Star Lord's father. 

Other rumors hint that Karen Gillan may return as the villain Nebula and that the film's previous baddie, Ronan, is indeed dead and will not be returning for the second film. 

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is scheduled for a May 5, 2017 release date.
