'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' movie plot updates: James Gunn to deviate from comics, Marvel calls plot 'risky'

"Guardians of the Galaxy" was no doubt a smash hit. No wonder a sequel for the comedy action movie is already on the cards. However, "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is, for now, something that is "risky" — or at least its plot is. The original movie was an adaptation of the Marvel Comics of the same name and many assumed that the sequel would be based on the same source as well. However, that won't be the case.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn dished out in a recent "Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend" podcast that the story for the follow-up superhero film came to him while he was still piloting the first, which means that the plot is lock, stock and barrel out of his own head rather than lifted from the Marvel universe. The director said that "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will shed light to Peter Quill's father but he intends to make him somebody "different from the comics."

"We'll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we're going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole," Gunn said, as quoted by Uproxx.

The director earlier said that he would like to give more details and background on Ravagers, Yondu and Kraglin, Nebula and the Collector in the forthcoming follow-ups of the film. He pitched the idea to Marvel, which issued the green light despite their qualms with the riskiness that goes with it.

"It's different than what's in the comic books," Gunn said in the podcast as he retold what went down in the meeting with the Marvel big bosses. "'Okay, here's what I think the sequel should be.' And they were like, 'Oh, whoa. That's risky, but okay.' Now I'm going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we'll find out how well it works."

Media outlets see eye to eye with Marvel here. Departing from the comics will either make or break the franchise. Nevertheless, if the studio has big trust on the director, fans might as well do the same.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is scheduled to hit the silver screen on May 5, 2017.
