"Guardians of the Galaxy" proved to be a massive hit on the silver screen as it brought humor and a make-believe universe to life. The sequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," is going to be a surefire stunner with the unexpected twist the movie took for Star-Lord's backstory, and it wasn't an easy task to do.

In the first movie, Chris Pratt's character, Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord, sees his cancer-stricken mother bedridden and close to dying. She told Peter that his father was an angel. Although everyone else thought his mother's words were simply caused by her disease, she was actually describing his father's features, Movie News Guide explains.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" director James Gunn revealed at San Diego Comic-Con last July 23 that instead of J'son, Ego the living planet is going to be Star Lord's father. Kurt Russell will be the human form of Ego for the upcoming sequel, io9 has learned.

The catch, though, was that Marvel didn't own Ego's character. Gunn took to Facebook, saying, "When I first pitched Ego as Quill's father, I THOUGHT we owned the character. After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn't own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade."

Reports from The Playlist confirms the switch. Negasonic Teenage Warhead, a property of Marvel, appeared in the "Deadpool" movie. Screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese felt like tweaking her powers for the film, so they had to ask permission from Marvel Studios to do that. From being a psychic to being explosive, Fox and Marvel closed the deal with Ego the Living Planet as the payment.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will premiere on May 5, 2017.
