"Guardians of the Galaxy" fans may still have months to go before they see the release of the sequel to the cosmic Marvel superhero film. However, leaks about "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" continues to pour left and right as the wait goes on. This time, the tidbits came from James Gunn himself as the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" director tries to explain how a character trade between Marvel Studios and Fox has saved his script from crumbling down.

Earlier this week, Gunn had decided to be upfront about the inner workings of "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" by explaining in a post on his official Facebook page how a sudden trade between Fox and Marvel allowed him to continue using a very important character in his film — Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Rusell). Ego is Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) father, and with the film focusing on Quill's parentage, it seems like "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" wouldn't be the same at all.

"Yes, this is true! When I first pitched Ego as Quill's father, I THOUGHT we owned the character," Gun wrote on his post. "After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn't own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade," he added.

Collider further explains the trade between Marvel and Fox that saved "Guardians of the Galaxy 2,"citing a question and answer segment that revealed which characters the studios actually exchanged. It turns out that rights to Russell's Ego the Living Planet had originally been with Fox because of its origins with a 1981 "Fantastic Four" comic. Luckily, Fox was willing to barter the character for added powers to Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna HildeBrand) for "Deadpool."
