|PIC1|The stars of the hit musical Guys and Dolls have been digging deep in their pockets to help raise money for Sunderland Citadel thanks to a fantastic fundraising idea by the management at the Sunderland Empire.

The Guys and Dolls script includes many references to The Salvation Army in the script and many scenes representing Salvation Army officers at their mission work. The play even ends with the evangelisation of one the lead characters in the play - a former gambler from the shadier walks of life.

This has prompted the theatre to pass round buckets after each show encouraging members of the audience to show their genoristy by donating spare change, which will be passed around the 2,000-capacity Edwardian auditorium.

Northern Divisional Commander Major Melvin Fincham showed appreciation for the kind gesture by the Sunderland Empire by joining lead actor Samantha Janus, who starred in Game On and Liverpool One, co-star Alex Fern (Eastenders) and cast members Norman Bowman and Louise Dearman for a photo shoot.

The stars got the fundraising ball rolling by placing pound coins in one of the collection tins, which will also be placed in the theatre's foyer and bars.

Major Fincham said: 'We are extremely grateful for this very kind gesture by the Sunderland Empire and all connected with the show. If everyone gives a little we have the potential to raise a significant amount of money, which will go towards the good work that Sunderland Salvation Army does in the community.'

Guys and Dolls is at the Sunderland Empire until Saturday 17 February 2007.
