'Halo 6' news: Upcoming shooter to focus only on Master Chief, will not feature new playable characters

"Halo 5" will not be released for the PC but "Halo 6" will be.343 Industries

"Halo 6" is going back to its roots by putting more focus on the Master Chief.

When "Halo 5" came out in 2015, the game received glowing reviews from critics. However, some fans were disappointed in the relative absence of Master Chief in the game's main campaign. Considering the negative fan reaction, developer 343 Industries has decided to address the issue in the next "Halo" installment.

Studio head Kiki Wolfkill and franchise director Frank O'Connor recently caught up with GamesTM magazine issue no. 186 (via WCCFTech), and they revealed some of the studio's plans for "Halo 6."

"We definitely marketed in a way that we hoped was going to bring surprise," O'Connor said, "but for some fans and certainly fans of Master Chief, it was a huge disappointment because they wanted more Chief."

In "Halo 5," players were forced to split their time playing Master Chief and Spartan Lock. Some were not pleased with that type of gameplay, so they suggested that 343 industries should try to focus on just one character instead. The duo revealed during the interview that "Halo 6" will not introduce any new playable characters because of fan demands.

"Doubling down on Master Chief's story and the amount of focus on him was probably the easiest learning from 'Halo 5,'" O'Connor continued.

The franchise director went on to stress that Master Chief is more significant now than he has ever been. He mentioned that the number of times when fans asked for "more Chief" after completing the "Halo 5" campaign was enough for them to incorporate it in their plans for "Halo 6."

More details about the upcoming title are expected in the coming months, but an Electronic Entertainment Expo appearance this year for "Halo 6" is unlikely.

"Halo 6" is developed by 343 Industries and published by Microsoft Studios. A release date for the game is yet to be announced.
