Despite "Hannibal" being cancelled after three seasons and the actors moving on with new projects, actor Hugh Dancy, who played FBI profiler Will Graham, was able to discuss with Collider the direction that "Hannibal" would have gone in if it was renewed for a fourth season.

According to Dancy, the fourth season would have potentially circled back to the events of the very first season.

"It was a complete restart, without describing it -- because who knows, God knows, maybe some way we may be able to do it in the future -- but it took us back to the first season in a very unexpected way, and made total sense of that cliffhanger ending; it seemed justified," the actor explained.

Dancy also stated that the fourth season would still be based on the details from the book, with Will Graham as the central figure and that it is not yet going to divert into the series where Clarice is introduced. This is because they did not have the rights to the book "Silence of the Lambs" but did have the rights to "Red Dragon," which the series is based on.

Dancy also stated that as of the moment there are no updates regarding the show's revival, particularly because the key cast and crew are busy with new projects.

When asked if there was a possibility the story for season 4 could work as a film instead of a series, Dancy stated that it might be different given that the direction for the series was "was very languorous, very image-rich storytelling" but he did state that he did want the story to be told nevertheless.

"Hannibal" was cancelled primarily due to low viewer ratings despite critical acclaim and the series was shopped around for a while, from Amazon to Netflix but neither deal materialized and the series has now been officially labeled as canceled now that the cast and crew have been released from their contracts.
