'Hart of Dixie' season 5 cancelled: Renewal hopes after season 4 penultimate episode finale?

"Hart of Dixie" has just been canceled by The CW, officially ending any hope for season 5.

The news broke out when show creator Leila Gerstein posted on her Twitter account last March 6, "The final three episodes of #HartofDixie begin tonight. Buckle up, I think you will enjoy the ride. Xo."

Her next tweet continued with, "No one out there loves #HOD more than me. I would have gone 17 years! But I assure you, we prepared for this... And the finale will be tremendously satisfying to all."

Fans need not worry because, as Gerstein said, the show will not end on a cliffhanger. There is a level of closure to be expected. She mentioned that all the loose plot threads of the show would end, and all of the series' questions would be answered in the last few episodes.

Gerstein stated, "I will say that there is a lot of closure in the season finale and there is a definite feeling of celebration at the end of the season."

The CW network has not yet given any official statement regarding the cancellation of the show or if it may be picked up for continuation on other platforms.  Nonetheless, Scott Porter, who plays George Tucker in the series, confirmed what many have speculated before: the show may see its last season if viewer ratings did not pick up.

He stated on Twitter, "Folks wondering why #HartOfDixie got canned? Simple numbers game folks. Ratings still matter and dictate wins and losses. You have to WATCH."

"Hart of Dixie" is the first show that The CW network has canned this year. "The Flash," "Arrow," and "The Vampire Diaries" have all been announced to continue with new seasons. Even "Beauty and the Beast" was picked up for a fourth season despite low viewer ratings.

The penultimate episode, "End of Days," airs on March 20, while the finale episode, titled "Bluebell," will air on March 27.
