'High School Musical 4' cast rumors, release date: Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron to return as club coaches

"High School Musical 4" is moving forward, but as previously reported, it will star a new set of characters instead of bringing back the original characters of the first trilogy, which would make sense given they are no longer in high school. However, actors Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are rumored to return.

The two are notable for having been a couple in real life but reportedly broke up following the release of "High School Musical 3." Hudgens has since been dating "The Shannara Chronicles" star Austin Butler. However, according to The Bitbag, the two stars may be setting aside their differences to portray their characters in "The High School Musical 4."

According to the report, the stars of the original trilogy had a reunion and this is noted to be the first time Hudgens and Efron have spoken to each other since their breakup, indicating they may be back on good terms and this could allow them to work together for the upcoming fourth film.

Their characters had a romantic relationship in the films and it is possible they will get back together in the fourth film, rekindling their relationship. It is also rumored that Efron and Hudgens will be the team coaches for the basketball team and the drama club respectively.

Movie News Guide does point out, however, that Butler may not approve of Hudgens' decision to work with her ex-boyfriend and is speculated to be the main reason why Hudgens and Efron might not be able to reprise their roles in "High School Musical 4."

Neither Efron nor Hudgens have yet confirmed they might guest star in the film and the studios have not yet released any official comment regarding their possible return or if the film will even have room for the old cast members to appear.

"High School Musical 4" will premiere in 2017.
