The "Highlander" film in the '80s sure was memorable. The movie performed poorly at the box office but has become a cult classic ever since. It has even spawned several sequels and TV spin-offs. And who can forget Freddie Mercury belting out the words to "Princes of The Universe"? The franchise has been dormant for years now, but things are about to change.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate is planning a "Highlander" reboot and "John Wick" co-director Chad Stahelski is going to be helming the film.

"I've been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school. Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can't think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces," Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter.

The publication says Neal H. Moritz and Peter Davis will produce the film, and there's a chance David Leitch may join the project as well with their 87Eleven production team. However, this hasn't been confirmed yet. Leitch has signed on to direct "Deadpool 2" recently. By coincidence, "Deadpool 2" star Ryan Reynolds was linked to the reboot film before he dropped out a few years ago.

The "Highlander" reboot has been under development ever since Lionsgate subsidiary Summit Entertainment acquired the film rights from Davis-Panzer Productions in 2008. Since then, the project has seen a revolving door of directors including Justin Lin, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

Obviously, the film isn't going to come out anytime soon. Sources say the studio is still looking for writers to work on the screenplay, and they still have to look for actors to fill the roles. Well, whoever gets to play the lead will get to say the tagline, "There can be only one."
