'Homeland' season 5 spoilers, plot news: show's direction discussed; unexpected Emmy nods

"Homeland" is set to return this fall, and the show's execs have been sharing some details about the hit political spy thriller's upcoming fifth season.

Even back in March, series showrunner Alex Carey already revealed via E! News that there will be a two-year time jump between the fourth and fifth seasons, which will open a lot of new opportunities for Claire Danes' character Carrie Mathison. This is further explained by the official synopsis for "Homeland" season 5, which reads:

Season 5 will pick up two years after Carrie Mathison's ill-fated tenure as Islamabad station chief. Struggling to reconcile her guilt and disillusionment with years of working on the front lines in the 'war on terror,' Carrie finds herself in a self-imposed exile in Berlin, estranged from the CIA and working for a private security firm."

On the other hand, series co-creator Alex Gansa recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the show will still tackle current situations despite leaving the Middle East terrorism issue at the end of the fourth season. This paves the road for a location shift to Berlin, Germany. The series is currently filming at the legendary Babelsberg Studio, the home of Nazi propaganda leader Joseph Goebbels during the time of the Second World War. The place reportedly offers the new backdrop for the upcoming season.

Gansa also talked about the recent recognition that "Homeland" season 4 received from the Emmy's. Aside from the Best Drama series nomination, the show also received nods for the Best Lead Actress in a Drama series for Danes, as well as the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for series director Lesli Linka Glatter.

"It was truly unexpected and very gratifying at the same time," the series co-creator said. "It's hard to make a comeback, especially in Hollywood. Now I can really be honest and reveal just how devastated I was last season when we didn't get a nomination [last year]. It was really hard for everyone on the show."

"Homeland" season 5 is expected to premiere this September on Showtime.
