Showtime's hit spy drama series Homeland is taking the suspense and tension to New York City as it introduces America's first female president in the drama.

Perhaps in a bid to draw inspiration from the US polls which is set to happen this year, House of Cards actress Elizabeth Marvel has been cast to play the role of the nation's first female commander in chief Elizabeth Keane.

According to Deadline, the character is "is a former junior Senator from New York. Bright, charming and lively, Keane can be blunt; a natural politician."

The decision to go with a female president has gained much attention because of parallels in real life, as Hillary Clinton, a former US senator has been voted as the Democrats' candidate to go against the Republicans' Donald Trump in the bid for the White House.

According to an interview with EW, executive producer Alex Gansa explained that the plot for Season 6 will take place in between the transition period from election day in November and the inauguration of the elected president in January.

"There is this strange period in America where there are 72 days when it's not exactly clear who's in charge, and there is a new president that needs to be educated on what it means to be president.That is a very complex transfer of power filled with all kinds of anxiety and different competing interests — How do I get the ear of the new president? How does the new president elect deal with the president that's going out? — and it's a dangerous time in our democracy," Gansa explained.

In previous seasons, the show has been to the Middle East and Berlin, tackled the ISIS and the heart of the war on terror.

Homeland is set to return to the network this fall.
