The hit Showtime series "Homeland" has tackled sensitive issues in the past seasons, including the terrorism instigated by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). In the upcoming installment, will screenwriter Alex Gansa attempt to touch on one of the most delicate topics for Americans, the 9/11 attacks?

In the previous season, Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and her storyline took her to different parts of the world, from the war-torn Afghanistan to the jihadist-threatened Berlin. Now that it has been revealed that season 6 will be set in the United States, specifically in New York City, viewers are curious to learn what kinds of bad guys the heroine will be facing in the future. Showtime big boss David Nevins previously shared with Entertainment Weekly that most of the scenes would be shot in and around New York City. He shared that this would be an exciting venture for the staff as well as the actors after spending so much time abroad.

"After setting the show in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Europe, we wanted to do another America story. Also, I think the actors will be happy to be back in the U.S. For a year. I don't think it's necessarily going to stay there forever, but there was a strong interest in doing a domestic story from the creative team," Nevins said.

With the storyline expected to revolve mostly in the New York area, there are speculations that the 9/11 attacks would be featured in season 6. After writing about some of the most sensitive issues of the modern day, Gansa may opt to include the tragic event. After all, he has already included ISIS, Vladimir Putin, and computer hacking in his portfolio of issues tackled in the series.

"Homeland" season 6 is expected to return this fall.
