'House of Cards' season 5 release, spoilers: end of the road for Michael Kelly?

Michael Kelly as Doug Stamper Netflix

"House of Cards" season 5 is rumored to be the last season for the show, hinting that Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) may be killed off by the season finale. Now, new rumors suggest that this will also be the last season for his constant ally, Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly).

According to the IBTimes, there have been speculations that Kelly may have already departed the show and is not going to appear in season 5 or that his character will only be in for a few episodes before he is killed off or departs due to his guilt concerning his actions in season 4.

Fans of the series will recall that in season 4 Doug wanted to donate his liver to Frank who needed a transplant. However, Doug was not qualified due to being an alcoholic and instead he went out to kill a patient in order to guarantee Frank gets an organ and the surgery before it is too late. Doug later felt remorse for this and offered money to the family of the man he killed and even went out of his way to visit them.

This would make it possible that he simply decides to leave Frank in order to stop doing other murderous acts or he may be killed off.

It is pointed out in the report that neither Kelly nor Netflix have announced the actor's departure and as a matter of fact Kelly had gone on the record to state he hopes his character remains alive on the show for as long as possible.

"You know, I feel so blessed to have landed this job and to be able to play him for as long as I have. I feel so fortunate to have respect and admiration from [my] peers. So to meet all these great actors, it's incredible," the actor explained in the interview.

"House of Cards" season 5 will premiere in 2017.
