Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) is expected to hit rock bottom when "House of Cards" returns for season 5, according to cast member Michael Kelly.

In an interview with The Wrap, Kelly revealed that series creator Beau Willimon told him earlier that he wanted to see Frank and his character Doug Stamper to experience a life without power.

"I remember Beau telling me for Season 3, he said, 'I want to see what happens when these characters fail,'" Kelly stated. "He's like, 'I can write you and Kevin [Spacey] twirling your moustaches forever and destroying everything in your path, but I think it would be — I just want to challenge myself. I want to see what happens when they fail.'"

While Kelly did not mention how Frank and Doug will experience a major downfall in the show's fifth season, speculations claim that Frank's wife, Claire (Robin Wright), will do everything that they can to steal the U.S. presidency out of him. This could mean that she could even kill him if she has to.

Meanwhile, the speculations about Frank's possible downfall intensified after actor Mahershala Ali revealed that he will no longer return to reprise his role as Frank's Chief of Staff in "House of Cards" season 5.

In an interview with GQ, the actor revealed that he had to quit the Netflix Originals series after being tapped to portray the role of Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes in the upcoming "Luke Cage" series.

"I've never talked about it. It's time to go. I want to do more. There's only so much space for you to stretch and develop and grow because there are so many characters," the actor revealed.

He also admitted that he could consider his stint in "House of Cards" opening up a lot of opportunities for his acting career, including his role in "Hunger Games: Mockingjay" films.

Netflix has yet to announce the official release date of "House of Cards" season 5.
