How can you be sure that you will go to heaven?

The cold hard truth is, we are all sinners. Even if we try our best, we often find ourselves falling short of our own expectations. Are there days when you doubt that you'll go to heaven because you're committing a sin over and over again? Are there lingering doubts that you are not worthy to enter heaven? How can you be sure that you will go to heaven after you pass away?

Believe and Accept

Sin is the very thing that distances us from the Lord. The more we sin, the more we feel like we're unforgivable beings. This is the devil at work right here. The devil wants you to think that God will no longer love you because you are a sinner. Often, we believe this. Of course, it is not true.

What we need to do is easy: repent, believe and accept. Can you believe that our access to heaven is not achieved by anything that we can physically do here on earth? It is purely by grace, through our Lord Jesus Christ that we are able to be reconciled with God, and spend eternity with our heavenly father.

How merciful our God is. Indeed, God wants you to believe and accept that He is your one and only Savior. John 3:16 clearly says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." It can't be any clearer than this.

Yet, many people wonder, what is the right way to "believe" in God? Is it just acknowledging that He will save you? Or that He created everything? No, your belief must be greater than this. First, you must believe that Jesus is Lord and saviour. The other thing you must believe is that Jesus beat death when he rose again and was resurrected. "He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords" Revelation 19:16. When you believe in these, you will receive salvation.

Have Faith and Trust

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39

Salvation is a gift of grace. We don't earn salvation just because we chose to believe or through good works. God gave this to us because of his mercy. This is also similar in the sense that we cannot lose salvation just because we make mistakes or sin. This is why you must remove any lingering doubts about your worthiness. If that isn't enough, just think about the sacrifice Jesus went through, and the fact that he went through that sacrifice already knowing that we are sinners and undeserving, but yet he loved us still and went to the cross willingly, knowing all our faults, sins and bad habits before doing so.

Remember, everything that God has said will happen. He will never take his word back. If he says that you are saved, then you are. You have to learn to find confidence in His words. You have to trust that the Lord will fulfill His promises. Let your faith be bigger than your fears. And once you put your complete trust on your faith, you will be sure that you will go to heaven when that time comes.
