'How to Get Away with Murder' season 2 spoilers: Annalise tries to recover from Wes's attempt on her life

Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) survived the fatal stomach wound inflicted by a gunshot, based on the latest trailer for "How to Get Away with Murder" season 2.

The revered criminal lawyer and law school professor was shot by Wes Gibbons (Alfred Enoch) when she asked her students to shoot her so they can frame Catherine Hapstall (Amy Okuda) for shooting her and killing ADA Emily Sinclair (Sarah Burns).

When the series returns for the second half of season 2, Annalise will be seen on her hospital bed as she recovers from the wound.

According to series showrunner Pete Nowalk, Annalise will need more than physical healing to recover from events that happened during the midseason finale.

"We left her bleeding out on the floor — and when we come back, she's really broken," Nowalk told TV Line. "It was really important to Viola and to me to play the reality of that — of a person who's gone through a major life trauma. We're going to see a whole different side of her."

Nowalk revealed that the tough and intelligent lawyer will go through the shock and hurt that she experienced when Wes, one of her closest students, tried to kill her after he got furious when she told him that Rebecca (Katie Findlay) is already dead.

The series showrunner also teased that Annalise and Wes's link from the past will be revealed.

"We've set up a lot of mysteries about how Annalise knows Wes, what their past is, why she feels so maternal toward him. All of that will be elaborated on in our back six episodes, and the baby is really important. It's a great insight into Annalise. I'm really proud of it — and I'm hoping she will, too — because it was such a collaboration."

The midseason premiere of "How to Get Away with Murder" season 2 will air on Feb 11 on ABC.
