The strong bond and friendship seen between Hiccup and Toothless have captured the hearts and imaginations of the audience, making "How to Train your Dragon" a success. It was immediately followed by the second installment, "How to Train your Dragon 2," which added more depth as well as heartache in the story with the death of Hiccup's father. It would appear Dreamworks is preparing everyone for more heartbreak when the third installment comes along.

In the second film, Hiccup assumes the responsibility of village chief by protecting his people. Drago, the main antagonist, attacks Berk with a giant Bewilderbeast under his command. With the help of Toothless, Hiccup thwarts the incoming danger, officially making him the head of the village and making Toothless the king of the dragons.

This may be the start of a more complicated third film. Movie Pilot has learned that Drago will be coming back. There is no confirmation if he returns with axes hurling or will pretend to have reformed to regain the people's trust and end with a backstabber, but it could possibly etch an enmity between humans and dragons.

If this is to happen, there is a huge chance that the film will stick to the novel's plot, with Hiccup and Toothless separating for good, as both of them will be forced to think of their own first. This will be a disaster for fans of the trilogy, considering the whole message of the movie is friendship between man and beast.

Another interesting plot is the revelation of what happened to the night furies. Valka and Drago both knew how the night furies look like, which could point out that they must have knowledge of Toothless' race and history.

Nonetheless, it seems all speculations lead to a tragic loss of a friend. Movie News Guide has quoted that the books created by Cressida Cowell started with an adult Hiccup mentioning, "There were dragons when I was a boy." It could insinuate that the dragons may already be gone.

Fans will have a long time to scour for information, as the film is set to be released on May 18, 2018.
