'Insidious 4' news: Franchise may cross over with 'Sinister' in the future

"Insidious" could be sharing universe with another horror franchise in the future.

Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum has just confirmed they had once considered an "Insidious" and "Sinister" crossover, and even though that did not pan out, they are still open to making it happen in the future.

Speaking to CinePOP about the crossover while promoting "Insidious 4: The Last Key," he said, "I hope so. I want to. We almost did Insidious and Sinister and I still feel like we might do that so, I think so. I think we're going to cross our worlds at some point. I don't know how yet but we're gonna try."

Blum and his production company have been influential in the current wave of modern horror flicks with its low-budget yet successful films including "Paranormal Activity," "The Purge," "Get Out," and "Split," in addition to the "Insidious" and "Sinister" movies.

Currently on its fourth outing, "Insidious" is the strongest franchise from the company so far, bringing in a total of more than $400 million out of an overall $26.5 million budget. It focuses on the realm called "The Further," and offers characters that understands the evil their facing, with Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) representing the most notable of the bunch. The "Sinister" franchise, on the other hand, centers explicitly on the hauntings of a lone demonic entity called Bughuul and its effect to those around him.

Both films have shared little in common so far, but given they both revolve around the premise of supernatural entities tormenting the living, it is not hard to imagine the two properties sharing the same fictional universe. Cinema Blend suggests Blumhouse could bridge them by pitting Elise or "Insidious'" new heroine Imogen Rainier (Caitlin Gerard) against "Sinister's" Bughuul. Only time will tell.

For now, fans can catch up with Elise's story in "Insidious: The Last Key." Directed by Adam Robitel, the movie sees the parapsychologist confronting the demon she accidentally set free in the past after investigating her childhood home. The film premiered last week and is still in theaters now. Check out the trailer below.
