As people across the UK prepare to celebrate Bonfire Night next week, national insurer Congregational & General is urging all churches planning public firework displays to ensure everyone not only enjoys themselves, but also goes home safe and sound.

The company is issuing a number of safety guidelines that are available on its Safer Places of Worship website. Church organisers are urged to follow simple procedures before, during and after their planned events.

Prior to the event, organisers are advised to work within recognised health and safety guidelines, such as: checking the venue is big enough to allow safe dispersal of fireworks; that the exits are clearly signposted and free from obstruction; and that spectators are discouraged from bringing their own fireworks.

Margaret Slater, Congregational's Marketing Manager, said: "Bonfire Night is a fantastic British tradition and most firework displays take place with no cause for concern. However, on occasion you do hear reports of injuries to people or damage to buildings.

"Therefore, without alarming people, we want to ensure that anyone attending a display this year on church-owned premises stays safe. Our guidelines provide straightforward yet concise advice free of charge, but above all we want everyone to enjoy their cinder toffee, hot soup and fireworks with their friends and family."
