iPad Mini 3 vs Nexus 9 specs comparison: Battle of the new 'mini' tablets

This appears to be an eventful week for small tablet lovers, as two of the most trusted tech companies released their new line of portable tablets in the market.

Apple Inc. announced the release of the iPad Mini 3 alongside the iPad Air 2 earlier today, while Google came up with the HTC-manufactured Nexus 9 together with Nexus 6 and the highly anticipated Android 5.0 Lollipop update just a few hours before.

The release of the two new tablets means that there are more options in the market today. But the question is, which of these two mini tablets are worth buying?

The new iPad Mini is released with a 7.9-inch screen that has a 2048 x 1536 resolution with a 326 ppi image density, while the Nexus 9's screen is slightly bigger at 8.9 inches with the same resolution as the iPad Mini 3, yet it has a lower image density of 287 ppi.

The designs of these two new tablets are very different from each other, since Apple's latest mini tablet comes in a 7.5 mm thick aluminum body, and Google's Nexus 9 has a 7.95 mm body with soft, matte-finished back and brushed metal edges.

The iPad Mini 3 has the exclusive 64-bit Apple A7 1.3 GHz dual-core CPU and M7 motion co-processor with 1 GB RAM, while the Nexus 9 has a powerful 64-bit Tegra K1 2.3 GHz dual-core CPU as well as a Kepler DX1 GPU with 2 GB RAM.

Both new devices run using the latest software updates from their respective companies. The iPad Mini 3 naturally has the latest iOS 8 software, while Nexus 9 will come with Google's newest Android 5.0 Lollipop, which will also be featured in the new Nexus 6 phablet.

Apple's iPad Mini 3 features a 5-megapixel iSight primary camera in the rear and a 1.2-megapixel secondary camera in front. On the other hand, Nexus 9 offers an 8-megapixel primary camera and a 1.6-megapixel front-facing secondary camera.

The iPad Mini 3 Wi-FI only variant will be sold for $399 for the 16GB model, $479 for the 32 GB model, and $599 for the 128GB option.The iPad Mini 3 with 4G LTE has a price tag of $529 for 16 GB, $629 for 32 GB, and $729 for the 128 GB version.

The price for the Nexus 9 will be $399 for the 16 GB model and $479 for the 32 GB Wi-Fi only option, and around $599 for the 32 GB that has a 4G LTE flavor.

Both tablets appeal to different people, and it would be hard to determine which among these two devices will be the most ideal for everyone.
