iPhone 2018 release date, price & specs news: To be half the cost of its predecessor?

The latest word from the rumor mill suggests that Apple is set to launch not only one, but three new iPhone models this 2018. The Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to unveil the iPhone X successor later this year, but the public should also watch out for the other iPhone variant, if the reports are anything to go by. It is tipped that the LCD variant of the new iPhone will only cost half the price of its current flagship.

As reported by 9to5Mac, the LCD iPhone 2018 model is likely to have an incredibly cheap price, going within the same range as 2016's iPhone 7. The reputable tech analyst from KGI Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo, recently stated in his notes that the 6.1-inch iPhone LCD will only cost around USD $550. It will be even less expensive than the iPhone 8, although the latter's price could go near this mark by the time of the arrival of the new iPhone flagship.

If this report pans out, more people will get to experience the premium features currently offered by the iPhone X. The LCD iPhone 2018 will get flagship-like specs and design, including an all-screen notch display and Face ID system powered by TrueDepth camera technology. However, instead of using high-end OLED panels, this particular iPhone model will receive standard LCD screen, which is likely the main factor for its affordable price.

Meanwhile, Digitimes reported that the LCD iPhone 2018 will not be the only handset from Apple coming this year with lowered cost. The direct successor to the iPhone X, unofficially known as the iPhone X2, is believed to be the  cheapest iPhone flagship in years, thanks to the reduced cost of the components.

Prior to the arrival of iPhone X last year, Apple has reportedly spent around $400 per unit of the flagship device. However, there has been a price slash on the components to be used in the upcoming iPhone X successor, which will give Apple up to 10 percent savings in total production, or around $40 per unit. Assuming that Apple will pass the savings to the consumers, the iPhone X2 could get a price no greater than $900.

The iPhone 2018 units isare expected to be unveiled at Apple's keynote event in September.
