iPhone 6 release date imminent as Apple confirms trade-in program for older iPhones; Claim up to $280 credit

With the Apple iPhone 6 (or indeed iPhone 5S...or even iPhone 5C) release date almost certainly just weeks away, the tech. giant launched a new program on Friday that allows its customers to trade in their older version iPhones at Apple Stores throughout the United States to gain credit towards the new model.

The program's launch on Friday basically confirms that the launch of the new iPhone is imminent, and with an Apple event scheduled for September 10, it is extremely likely that the next generation iPhone will be unveiled at that conference, with the smartphone becoming available soon after.

Even prior to Friday's new trade-in program launch, Apple already had an online recycling program that allows iPhone users to trade in older versions for credit via an Apple gift card. However, the new nationwide program will allow customers to bring their old iPhones directly into Apple Stores to claim a discount on the new smartphone with a wireless contract.

It is unlikely there will be a rush from old iPhone customers to trade-in right now, as the new iPhone has not yet been released. However, come September 10th's event expect a big rush for trade-ins.

Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette has said in a statement: "iPhones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling."

She added, "In addition to helping support the environment, customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone."

According to the Wall St Journal, the maximum value that Apple will credit to a user for their old iPhone will be $280, and will only be given for the credit to be used on a new iPhone.

Apple's older online trade-in policy is slightly different, and will offer different prices to the new in store trade-in program. However, the online trade-in will provide a credit that can be used on any product without a contract being required, where as the in-store trade-in program will only be offered when a new iPhone on contract is taken.
