iPhone 6 release date and specs: 3mm iPhone Air and 5.7inch phablet among features of new phones

The iPhone 5S (Apple)

Rumors for Apple's next-generation smartphones set to release in 2014 are rife, with reports of an iPhone Air to the iPhone Phablet.

We've all heard rumors that Apple will likely launch two handsets this year, namely an upgrade to the iPhone 5S and a much bigger device with phablet-sized displays.

The iPhone 6, dubbed the iPhone Air, is likely to be an upgrade to the iPhone 5S, with upgraded specs and security features. Rumors also state that the new device will be very thin, measuring only 6 mm thick. The currently iPhone 5S is 7.6mm thick, so the new phone will be significantly thinner than its predecessor.

Consumers who have longed for a bigger iPhone may finally get their wish as the rumors state that Apple is testing out bigger screens ranging from 4.7 inches to 6 inches.

A recent report by Yahoo! Japan states that the Cupertino-based company will be releasing a new phablet line in May – this device will be one of two smartphones to release this year.

For years, Samsung has been launching phablets, beginning with the first-generation Samsung Galaxy Note, which was unexpectedly successful and popular amongst users.

The Galaxy Note 2 and Note 3 proved to be equally popular as the demand for phablets grow. The market for phablet-sized smartphones worldwide is mainly dominated by Samsung, and Apple is likely to want a place in the market.

The current Note 3 by Samsung has been dubbed the 'beast' of phones with its powerful processor, RAM, and battery life.

Apple's rumored iPhone phablet will likely pack the powerful A7 processor and a massive 5.7 inch screen.

There are also reports that Apple is experimenting with curved displays and sapphire glass to make the display unbreakable.
