With Apple unveiling a new iPhone iteration recently, it is now being said that the Cupertino-based company is thinning out its smartphone lineup and is ditching the iPhone 5s in favor of the new iPhone SE.

According to GSM Arena, the Cupertino-based company has already refreshed its iPhone page on the Apple website, adding the new iPhone SE on the list of available mobile smartphones. However, instead of expanding the lineup, the number of available iPhones remained the same as Apple apparently took down the iPhone 5s from the lineup.

The industry follower stated that Apple has yet to confirm the discontinuation. Should Apple really intend to replace the previous iteration with the iPhone SE, it comes as no surprise, as the newly launched iPhone SE looks similar to the iPhone 5s in design and build, although inside, the new iPhone is closer to the current-gen iPhone 6s.

Phone Arena added that Apple has yet to make the discontinuation official, and while the iPhone 5s is already not included on Apple's iPhone list, fans can still purchase the previous-gen iteration as an unlocked device from third-party resellers like Amazon and Best Buy, or via handset plans from major mobile carriers.

As for the iPhone SE, it remains to be seen if user feedback will positively build up for the new, smaller iPhone as it is still too early to tell. However, first impressions of the 4-inch iteration seem positive enough. According to Apple Insider, Apple's decision to launch a new iPhone with a small form factor has been a good one, as the iPhone SE targets mainstream Apple fans who want an iPhone iteration that sits comfortably in their hands.

Meanwhile, although the iPhone SE is smaller than today's conventional flagship iterations, Apple still managed to cram top-tier specs into the device. It is said that the new iPhone SE uses the A9 chip that powers the current-gen iPhone 6s. In addition, the small iPhone houses the new 12MP iSight camera setup that Apple features on its current-gen iPhone.
