Is the fourth Iron Man movie going to get cancelled after much speculation if the role will be continued by Robert Downey Jr.?

While Downey has stated that he is open to reprising the role, rumors are persisting that the actor and Marvel could not agree to the terms of his pay, leading the studio to rethink whether or not to pursue the project, University Herald reported.

It had earlier been rumored that Downey's Iron Man, who will be appearing in the Spider-man reboot featuring young actor Tom Holland, will be killed off in the movie and will be replaced by a female actor, who will play RiRi Williams.

Williams is a character from the comic books who will continue Iron Man's legacy, a 15 year old genius who builds her own suit in her dorm room by reverse engineering Tony's old armors.

Another issue raised about Iron Man 4 was Robert Downey Jr.'s age and fitness. The actor, who is now 51, will be 54 by the time the movie comes out and some have speculated that he will not be able to match physical demands of the role, something which he was quick to dismiss.

The star shared his experience of training for the role when he started playing Iron Man and he was already 40 years old at the time.

"I was, like, 40-years old. I figured if I was ever going to try to look like I was in decent shape, there wasn't going to be a better time. What I learned about myself playing "Iron Man" is that if you're not on your team, why should anyone else be? Something like the first "Iron Man," that was considered out of the box for me. Way outside the box. But that's what we are here to do: change expectations of ourselves," he said.

Until Marvel issues an official statement, the fate of the movie hangs in the balance.
