'Jane the Virgin' season 2 spoilers, plot: More exciting twists coming

Jane and her family saw baby Mateo for the first time during the season one finale of 'Jane the Virgin.'The CW

Unexpected events happened after Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) gave birth in the season 1 finale of "Jane the Virgin," and bigger twists are coming in season 2.

Series showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman hinted at what's next for Jane and her ruckus family when The CW's critically acclaimed telenovela-inspired series returns. According to Urman, the second season will pick up exactly where the first season ended.

For those who failed to catch the epic season 1 finale, Jane already gave birth to her "accidental" son Mateo with Rafael (Justin Baldoni), but she never got the chance to hold her newborn baby longer because he was immediately kidnapped by Sin Rostro (Bridget Regan). Rafael's wife Petra (Yael Grobglas) also had an evil scheme in her mind when she stole his sperm sample, and Jane's parents Rogelio (Jaime Camil) and Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) were married drunk in Las Vegas.

How will Gina take all of this news once she recovers from giving birth?

Urman explained that the reason for all those crazy twists is to give the series the typical telenovela feel. It will also build up the characters' strengths and what they will have to face. In an interview posted in Yahoo!, the series showrunner talked about their plans for next season, and said that Jane will get Mateo back "sooner than later."

She also revealed that Petra will make a very big decision at the beginning of the show, and it could affect Rafael in a big way. Is she ready to become a mother to Rafael's second child?

Also, the showrunner prepared the audience for the big changes in the coming season.

"We have big ones for every character; Petra has a giant one. And then we'll be exploring family, and how do these three women raise a boy? What's their idea of the perfect man? What values are they trying to instill in him? There's a lot they don't know. They know girls. They're got girls down pat. And now they have a son, and how do they raise a great man? That'll be part of the journey," Urman said.

"Jane the Virgin" season 2 begins this fall on The CW.
